When Is a Removal Denture Recommended for Multiple Tooth Replacement?

Removable dentures are typically recommended for multiple tooth replacement when a person has lost most of their real teeth. Dentures provide the most economical way to replace missing teeth, and that makes them a great option when most of the patient’s real teeth have already fallen out. The cost of a full set of dentures that replaces all of a person’s teeth is often less than that of a single dental implant.

Dentures for multiple tooth replacement

Getting dentures for multiple tooth replacement takes about two weeks on average and requires two trips to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will evaluate the mouth to determine if dentures are right for them. If the patient still has a few real teeth remaining, the dentist might recommend extracting these teeth so the patient can get a full denture set.

If the patient is cleared for dentures, the dentist will take an impression of their mouth. This impression is sent to a lab where restorations like dentures are made. When the customized dentures are ready, the patient is called in for a second visit. The dentist teaches the patient how to insert, remove and clean their oral prosthetic. Dentures need to be cleaned daily and soaked in denture solution overnight.

The benefits of replacing a patient’s teeth with dentures include:

  • The function of the patient’s lost teeth is restored
  • The patient gets a complete smile
  • The process of getting dentures is non-invasive

A better alternative

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and are held in place via suction. This leads to dentures shifting in the mouth when worn. For some unfortunate souls, their dentures might end up falling out while eating or speaking.

Implants can be used to anchor down dentures, keeping them stable in the mouth. The patient gets four to six implants on each half of their jaw, and these are fitted with attachments that can be used to secure dentures in place.

Implant-supported dentures can be removable or fixed. Removable implant-supported are just like traditional dentures. The only difference is how they are secured in the mouth. Traditional dentures are secured via suction, while implant-supported dentures are attached to implants.

Implant-supported dentures can also be fixed in place. This often leads to the most convenient option for patients because there are no specialized cleaning requirements. Using implants to hold dentures in place helps prevent the bone tissue loss that takes place when a tooth falls out. Patients need to be healthy and have an adequate amount of bone tissue in the jaw to be eligible for implants.
