What You Should Know About Tooth Replacement And Dental Implants

If you have lost one or more teeth, you may want to consider getting a dental implant. A dental implant is a false tooth that can take the place of your natural teeth. Replacing the missing tooth or teeth can help you feel less self-conscious about your smile. Implants also have a few health benefits for your mouth.

What to expect when getting dental implants

A dental implant consists of a screw, an abutment and an artificial tooth. The implant can support one or more teeth. There are a few steps involved in getting dental implants. First, the dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia to reduce pain and discomfort. Next, the dentist will make an incision in the gumline which will expose the jawbone.

The dentist can then drill down into the jawbone to make space for the implant. It is important that the implant is placed deeply in the bone. This will allow the implant to withstand the strong forces of chewing and biting.

Over the next several months, the bone in the jaw will begin to grow around the implant. Depending on the patient’s bone, this process can take several months. After the jaw has grown around the base, the dentist will place an attachment on the base. The artificial tooth, or crown, will be placed on this attachment.

Benefits of dental implants

One of the main benefits of a dental implant over other types of tooth-replacement options is that the implant will not shift in the mouth. Dentures and removable bridges can both shift while the patient is eating or talking, creating embarrassing moments. But the implant functions as a natural tooth, meaning it will stay in place.

Another benefit of dental implants is that the screw of the implant can help prevent bone loss in the jaw. With dentures, there are no roots of the teeth left. The jaw can begin to change shape and lose density, so the dentures will not fit properly in a few years. However, implants stimulate the jawbone to keep producing bone, which means the jaw will not lose its density.

Implants also do not rely on the surrounding teeth, which means the implants will not damage those teeth. Often, bridges are attached to the surrounding teeth and this can cause wear and tear on those teeth. Implants can also benefit the surrounding teeth by providing support for those teeth, preventing them from shifting toward the gap.

If you want to replace missing teeth in your mouth, then dental implants can be a good option for you. While the process takes a few months in total, the dental implants offer many advantages over traditional dentures or bridges. These types of implants can prevent bone loss in your jawbone, keep your other teeth from shifting and function better than dentures can. Visiting a dentist is the first step toward replacing your missing teeth.
