What a Dentist Can Tell You About the Dental Bridge Procedure

Many have heard of dental bridges for teeth replacement, but you may not be familiar with exactly how the procedure works. This review discusses each step of the dental bridge procedure to help you decide if you should visit the dentist for teeth replacement treatment.

A step-by-step guide to dental bridges

The process may look different for every dentist. However, the typical steps involved with the dental bridge procedure include having a consultation, the tooth being prepared, the temporary bridge being placed, the permanent dental bridge being placed, and caring for the dental bridge for the long term through good oral hygiene and regular check-up visits.

The consultation visit

The dental bridge process begins with a consultation visit with a licensed dental professional who offers this type of treatment. During the consultation, the dentist can order dental X-rays, conduct an oral examination, and discuss the goals for treatment with the patient. Based on that information, they can make a professional recommendation as to whether the dental bridge procedure is a viable solution.

Preparing the abutment teeth

The first step in the dental bridge procedure is preparing the abutment teeth, which are the natural teeth on either side of the dental bridge. This may involve filing down the teeth and reshaping them. A local anesthetic can be administered to ensure that it does not cause excess discomfort. An impression is then taken and sent to the laboratory to customize the permanent bridge. In some cases, the dentist can prepare the abutment teeth on the first consultation visit.

Placing the temporary bridge

It takes time for the dental bridge to be customized in the laboratory. While the patient is waiting, the dentist can place a temporary bridge. This protects the abutment teeth from damage while the permanent bridge is being customized and enables the patient to eat and show off an ideal smile.

Placing the permanent bridge

It can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks for the permanent bridge to be customized in the laboratory and returned to the dentist. Once the bridge arrives, a follow-up visit is scheduled, during which the bridge is placed in the patient's mouth. The dentist will ensure that it fits properly and is comfortable for the patient, although it may take time for them to adjust to the feel of it.

Caring for the dental bridge

A dental bridge is permanently fixed inside the mouth, and patients can care for their dental bridge the same way that they would care for their natural teeth. This includes brushing, using mouthwash, and visiting the dentist for regular dental cleanings and to check on the status of their oral health.
