General Dentist

Questions to Ask the General Dentist at Your Next Dental Exam

Just like your family physician, the general dentist is critical to your well-being. You should not neglect good dental habits, including visiting the dentist’s office. Your upcoming exam includes some important procedures to improve the health and strength of your teeth and gums. If you have not seen the dentist for a while, you may need a refresher of what to expect when you go.

How oral health impacts a person’s life

Taking good care of teeth and gums can have a positive effect on other aspects of a person’s wellness. Daily brushing and flossing will keep plaque and tartar buildup at bay. Doing this will reduce the risk of tooth decay and infections. Healthier teeth and gums can also impact cardiovascular health. Plus, people who have good dental habits enjoy a more attractive smile. This can help a person have good self-esteem.

Ask about when to start and how often to come

Going to the general dentist should not be an occasional visit. To maintain proper oral health, consistency is vital. From the time a child gets their first teeth, semiannual appointments are necessary. This pattern should continue throughout life. Patients can come to the dentist’s office in between these trips if they have tooth pain or other problems.

Ask about diagnosing conditions

A wellness checkup at the dentist’s office does more than clean teeth. These are also important visits for identifying conditions and emerging issues. At the beginning of the appointment, the hygienist will take a series of X-rays. Most patients will have one, except for young children and pregnant or nursing women. The dentist will also do a hands-on examination to look for signs of tooth damage or decay, along with gum disease.

Ask about treating cavities

Sometimes, a patient can feel or even see a cavity in their mouth. However, much of the time, it takes an X-ray or a dentist’s examination to spot decay. Once the general dentist informs the patient that they have a cavity, the person should find out about repairing it. For minor or moderate cavities, the dentist will drill into the tooth, remove the decay, and seal the tooth with a filling. For larger cavities, the dentist must perform a root canal. In this process, the dentist removes the pulp, seals the tooth, and places a crown over it.

Ask the general dentist about cosmetic options

This is a good time to talk about ways to repair tooth blemishes. The dentist is concerned about a patient’s oral health, but aesthetics are important too. Most dental offices can do teeth-whitening treatments. Porcelain veneers and crowns can also cover chips and cracks.

Be prepared at your next appointment

You can make your upcoming dental visit a more positive one. Go with some questions in mind for the general dentists. If you follow these suggestions, you can have less anxiety and feel more comfortable about your treatment and care. For good oral health and an attractive smile, make sure you continue to visit the dentist regularly.
