How We Place Composite Fillings in Hemet and the Benefits

We place composite fillings in Hemet on a regular basis. The composite fillings are natural-looking and incredibly durable. Still, we find that some local dentists still only offer traditional amalgam fillings. While they are also durable, amalgam looks like metal and will stand out in the mouth when one smiles. If you want to look like you have a naturally healthy smile, a composite material is a much better solution because the restoration looks natural. With that in mind, ask your dentist if they offer white or composite fillings. If the dentist says no, give us a call.

Why are fillings necessary, anyway?

Patients regularly ask us for more information about dental fillings. While most people are aware of cavities and fillings, few know how they happen or what the treatment process looks like. A cavity is actually tooth decay. Everyone has bacteria in their mouth, and at a small level, that is okay. If one eats a lot of sugar and starch, then the bacteria will start to colonize the teeth, spreading and creating sticky plaque. Plaque is dangerous because it can secrete acid that begins to attack the teeth. It will keep attacking the enamel until one brushes his or her teeth and remove it.

However, each time acid attacks the enamel until it wears away and the process of tooth decay begins. The acid starts to slowly decay or eat more of the tooth structure until there is a noticeable cavity that requires treatment. The process involves us removing the decayed portion of the tooth and cleaning it. We then use composite fillings to replace the missing tooth structure.

Restoring tooth structure is a critical step in the treatment process since the tooth will be sensitive and will experience pain if the patient does not seek treatment. Patients will also experience irritation and even pain when biting down to chew. Not only does the tooth need restoration, but it must be the correct restoration. The teeth are not square or rectangular boxes that live inside the mouth like blocks. Each one has unique curves and ridges for eating.

These ridges also fit perfectly with the teeth around, above or below it. Like a puzzle, all of the teeth work together to create an individual's bite. If one tooth is out of position or one ridge is not in the right place, an individual's bite can be off and can become uncomfortable to eat. Thus, it is important to visit a dentist who is experienced in working with composite fillings. We are and can ensure that they look natural.

The process of placing a dental filling involves us removing the decay, cleaning the tooth and placing the resin material on the top of it. We will then shape the material and be incredibly precise in how we do it in order to ensure every ridge is in the right place. Once done, your tooth will be restored and feel like it used to.
