Denture Repair or Denture Replacement

Denture repair might be needed if your dentures are uncomfortable or loose when worn. These are typically signs that repairs or a new set of dentures might be needed.

Getting dentures is one of the most popular ways to replace missing teeth and one of the more affordable options. Full denture sets are often recommended when a patient has lost most of their real teeth, while partial dentures are used when a patient is only missing a few teeth. Dentures can restore the wearer’s smile and the function of lost teeth. They can also restore the wearer’s ability to chew and speak properly.

Figuring out if a patient needs denture repair or replacement

People's mouths are constantly changing, so a set of dentures that fit perfectly at first will eventually become loose or uncomfortable over time. Dentures consist of two main parts: a framework that looks like gum tissue and rests on the wearer’s gums and artificial teeth that replace the patient’s lost teeth.

Conventional dentures are typically held in place via suction. Dental adhesives can also be used to give them additional stability.

A good-fitting set of dentures should allow the wearer to comfortably smile, speak, and eat. If a person is having a difficult time doing any of these things while wearing their dentures, repairs or replacement might be needed.

Traditional dentures should not rub against gum tissues and cause irritation, and they should not slide around when being worn. Dentures for the top set of teeth should be securely held in place via suction, while the lower set should float above the gums. This should create a comfortable and strong bite. if eating or speaking with dentures becomes a challenge, it is time to have the appliance inspected by a dentist.

Fixing dentures

Dentists recommend having dentures checked out as soon as there are issues with the way it fits or performs while eating and speaking. Minor issues with a set of dentures can easily become major issues if repairs are not made immediately. Wearing a set of dentures that do not fit properly puts stress on the appliance.

Issues that might require denture repair or replacement include:

  • Mouth sores caused by dentures sliding in the mouth
  • Changes to facial structures
  • A looser or tighter fit
  • Swelling or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Soreness in the gums or jaw
  • Changes in speech
  • Difficulty chewing with the device

The dentist will examine the dentures and the patient’s mouth to determine if it is best to repair or replace the oral appliance. Options for taking care of damaged dentures include:

  • Adjustments: At times, minor tweaks, like fixing the lining of dentures, can improve the way that it fits
  • Repairs: Dentists can address chips and cracks on dentures by performing repairs at the clinic or sending the appliance to a lab
  • Replacement: If the damage is severe, the dentist might recommend making a new set
