Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Can Improve Your Gum Health

Cosmetic dentistry is an art, and a science. This is because cosmetic dentistry is focused on the aesthetics of the teeth, making them look better, in addition to caring about and caring for the functionality and healthy elements of the teeth. Our role in your life is to ensure that when you smile, it is with a mouth full of beautiful, healthy, and perfectly aligned, white teeth. To that end, we have perfected a number of different procedures and techniques, some of which are well known to the public. For example, everybody knows that if you want your teeth whitened or need to have your teeth straightened you go to the cosmetic dentist. If you need to get a new tooth to replace an old one, you see the cosmetic dentist for an implant, a denture, or a bridge. Cracked and broken teeth are easily fixed using a dental crown or veneers. All of these fall squarely in the realm of cosmetic dentistry, as do a number other less well-known procedures that we perform. Some of these have a direct impact on the appearance of your mouth but also affect the overall health of your mouth as well.

In our cosmetic dentistry office, we also work hard to maintain your gums. Few people realize the importance that their gums play in their oral health and the look of their smile. One of the procedures that we perform, quite frequently, is known as a gingivectomy and has direct implications for your health as well as the appearance of your smile. More often than not, a gingivectomy is performed when a person has gum disease, periodontitis, or abnormal growth of the gum tissue. Essentially the gums become separated from the teeth and this leads to deep pockets within the gum, either by the tooth or higher up. In addition to looking extremely unsightly, these pockets become the breeding grounds for all kinds of bacterial infections. Bacteria build up in the plaque, which is much harder to clean in these deep pockets than if it were on the surface of the tooth. The bacteria can lead to infections or addition gum diseases. To remove this risk, we can perform a gingivectomy.

The procedure is performed under general anesthetic, which is injected into the gums around the site. Once the gum is properly numb we will remove the excess tissues with a scalpel, radiosurgery, or a laser. While we are performing this procedure, we will also sculpt and shape the gums using gum contouring, to ensure that the gums do not lose their shape during or after this procedure is being completed. Often times we will cover the gum with putty so that it is protected and has sufficient time to heal.

Gum contouring is an extremely interesting procedure that we perform as well. Gum contouring allows us to shape, form and resize your gums so that they are neither too long nor too short for your teeth. It is performed under general anesthesia as well so that you can remain comfortable.  In our cosmetic dentistry office, we can perform these and other procedures to keep your gums healthy and your smile looking fabulous.
