Aftercare Tips From a General Dentist – Implant Supported Dentures

After getting implant supported dentures, the right aftercare is essential for a fast recovery. Implants are popular prosthetics for replacing missing teeth. These can replace both the root and the crown of the tooth. That can help to prevent tissue loss and give you a better smile. Keep reading to find out more about what to do for your smile after getting implants.
Being careful with the implant
After getting implants, it is important to be careful with them. Playing with the new device can cause irritation in the area. The patient should avoid rinsing the mouth vigorously or touching it. It is also a good idea to avoid spitting. This is even more important if there is a healing cap attached to the implant.
Bleeding and swelling are normal
The surgical site might bleed for the next 24 hours, so patients should not panic. This is a normal reaction. If the bleeding is excessive, biting down on gauze for 30 minutes can minimize it. If it lasts for longer than 24 hours, the dentist should be notified.
There may also be some swelling. This is a normal part of having surgery. The swelling can be minimized by putting an ice pack on the area near the site. Ice should be applied for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. There might be pain once the anesthetic has worn off. The dentist might prescribe medication for it.
The patient should have fluids and soft foods for the next several days. Having yogurt and warm soup is a good idea. However, the patient should not have hot soup, as this can prolong the bleeding. The patient may need to have antibiotics that the dentist prescribed. These need to be taken as prescribed. Otherwise, the patient might be at risk of infection.
Having good oral hygiene
During the first few days after a patient has gotten implant supported dentures, it is good to avoid using toothpaste. Mouthwash should also be avoided. Instead, the dentist might recommend that the patient use warm salt water after each meal. Once the area has healed a bit more, the patient can use toothpaste again. However, care should be taken while brushing near the healing cap.
Resting
After getting implants for dentures, the patient should spend time resting. This does not mean that the patient needs to spend all day in bed. In fact, it is a good idea to keep the head elevated to reduce bleeding. However, now might be a good time to catch up on TV shows or read a book. The more rest a patient gets, the faster they can recover.
