3 Common Problems Remedied by Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are shells that fit over your teeth. You may think of them as being for cosmetic use, but there are other issues that the restorations can fix. They can give you a boost of self-esteem since the veneers can cover many problems. While the veneers might not be for everyone, there are a few problems you might fix with them.

About veneers

The veneer procedure is irreversible, and it takes two visits. That involves preparing the tooth to receive the shell. Any discomfort is usually mild with the process. First, the dentist takes a mold of the patient’s teeth and chooses the correct shade. Then that impression goes to a lab, where the veneers get made.

Each veneer gets customized for that specific tooth. That way, the restorations will look natural, and the patient’s bite will not get affected. On the second visit, the dentist prepares the teeth by shaving off some of the enamel. Then the dentist sees if the veneers fit correctly. If so, it is time for the veneers to get bonded to the teeth. The dentist will use dental cement to adhere to the restorations to the teeth.

Each veneer can last a few years, but a patient may need to have them replaced at some point. Chewing on ice could crack the veneers. The patient should not use the teeth to open packaging either. Plus, dental veneers can stain, so patients might need to stay away from some drinks or foods.

Damaged teeth

There are many reasons the teeth might become damaged, including brushing too hard and receiving trauma. Habits such as clenching and grinding can also damage the teeth. Severe damage could require a significant fix or a replacement, but dental veneers often work. The restoration goes on the front of a tooth and is the only visible portion of that tooth when smiling.

Fixing discoloration

Dental veneers do a great job of making a smile appear even in color. Whitening products and regular cleanings do not fix all potential issues. For instance, medications might cause discoloration from the inside. Luckily, dental veneers can cover those issues.

A dentist might recommend that a patient avoid smoking or eating highly pigmented foods. However, there are some causes of staining that patients cannot control. That could include:

  • Enamel thinning
  • Mediations
  • Aging
  • Internal bleeding

Covering crooked teeth or gaps

Braces and other orthodontic methods are not the only way patients can correct misaligned teeth. If the gap is small, it might not be necessary to fix it through orthodontics. Instead, a dentist can place veneers over the area and arrange them correctly. That way, the restorations will cover up the gap.
