Why Do We Need Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are one of the most versatile dental prosthetics used by dentists. They can be used to address a wide range of issues and including cosmetic purposes.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a dental cap that is used to cover the part of a tooth that is visible above the gums. They are sometimes simply called caps. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials like porcelain, ceramic, composites, gold, silver and many alloys.

Many people opt for crowns that are made from porcelain or ceramic since these look the most like real teeth. Crowns are also combined with other popular prosthetics like implants or bridges. Before a crown is placed on a tooth, the dentist might remove some enamel from the tooth in question to ensure the cap fits properly.

Once crowns are installed, they are no different from real teeth. They do not have any specialized cleaning requirements. The person simply continues to clean their mouth like they normally would.

Why would you need dental crowns?

Here are some of the reasons why a person might need a dental crown:

1. A root canal

A root canal procedure is often performed to deal with severe cases of tooth decay where the pulp chamber has been exposed. The nerve and pulp can be infected by bacteria in the mouth and the most effective way to save the tooth at that point is a root canal.

The problem is, if a tooth needs a root canal, it has already been severely weakened by tooth decay. That is why dentists often recommend protecting a tooth with a crown after the procedure. The crown restores the appearance of the decayed tooth and prevents it from further decay or damage caused by the forces created when eating.

2. A broken, fractured or chipped tooth

If a tooth been damaged by trauma or tooth decay, a crown can be used to restore it. A severely broken tooth causes a lot of pain and dentists often deal with that by removing the pulp and nerve of the tooth. Afterward, the tooth is protected with a crown.

Crowns can also be used to restore the appearance of a chipped tooth. It helps to prevent minor chips from turning into something more serious.

3. Severe stains and discoloration

Teeth whitening treatments are typically the best way to deal with stains and discoloration, but it is not effective on all types of stains like those caused by tooth decay or fluorosis. When whitening treatments fail, a crown can be used to restore the appearance of a tooth. It is a more effective solution than getting a veneer since it covers the entire tooth.

Dental crowns do it all

Dental crowns can be used to protect your teeth or make them look better. If you go with porcelain or ceramic caps, they also make it easier to keep your teeth looking white. Dealing with any of the issues listed above? Explore your options with a dentist today.
