What are Permanent Dentures?

DenturesLearn more about dentures

Dentures are substitutes for natural teeth that have been removed. They are customized according to the size and structure of the mouth. Usually, dentures can be inserted and removed whenever needed and do not feel the same as real teeth. But they are made with strong materials to offer the same amount of bite force and functionality as real teeth.

A recent survey indicated that people between the ages of 34 -54 have lost at least one tooth due to an accident, tooth decay or cavities. Age is another factor that reduces the number of teeth. It is one of the most common problems being faced by aging adults; this is why permanent dentures may be the answer.

Permanent dentures

Dental specialists and orthodontists often refrain from using the term permanent dentures. However, a deeper understanding of the actual procedure may lead you to believe that this treatment is rather “permanent”.

Understanding “permanent dentures”

Why dentures have become so popular throughout the globe, specifically, “permanent dentures” is understandable. These differ from immediate dentures that are added to the empty cavity from which a tooth has recently been removed. These immediate dentures are added to provide comfort before the healing time is complete.

Most dentists prefer preserving your natural teeth and opt for implants rather than a complete denture. But in some cases, the only option is to install permanent dentures that are the closest option to real teeth.

Permanent dentures are comparatively sharper than other artificial options and are easier to chew and eat with. They give off the appearance of real teeth and maintain the structure of the jawline relatively well.

Teeth play a vital role in being able to communicate and speak properly; this is why permanent dentures are a better option rather than individual implants, which can leave room for error.

The Procedure for Permanent Dentures

Permanent dentures can take about four to six weeks to install. This treatment requires a few sessions at the dentist. Most of these appointments are included in the permanent denture-building process.

This procedure comprises of 3 steps:

  1. Impressions

This entails impressions of the jaw and measurement of your mouth.

  1. The permanent denture models

A temporary mold is created using plastics or other materials to try out for the exact size and shape of the required teeth.

  1. Installations

This includes casting the final dentures and then adjusting them if needed.

It is recommended by dentists to wear your dentures at least for 24 hours constantly to ensure there are no problems.

What's the bottom line?

Costs

The general cost range for these dentures goes from $600 to $10,000 per set. This is subject to the need of the patient and the services of the dentist.
